. the problem with the west coast is it is storm after storm that is going to pound california and oregon and washington state. you can see the next one is already making its way onshore, and we are looking at heavy rain, especially across northern california. you can see a closer look. that band of heavy rain just to the west of northern california, that's going to move onshore, and we are going to see a series of these rounds of heavier pockets of rain move in, especially this afternoon. winds will get gusty as well. we had a lot of delays yesterday because of the bad weather out in california. we will most likely see more of those today. look at some of the expected rainfall totals over the next 48 hours. we could end up with some parts of northern california, just north of redding, possibly picking up more than a foot of rainfall out of this system, and it does look like that will continue for most of the week. lynn? >> dylan, thanks so much. >>> and for the rest of us, it was another day of facing the fiscal cliff. white house negotiators head to capitol hill today. they're going to
storm warnings, you can see the majestic color, those are warnings. northern california expected to get snow at higher elevations, but not so much in the cascades. not a lot of moisture available. so, the west definitely seeing some changes from that warm weather pattern we were in. you notice the snowfall predictions, many of the mountains of california, only expecting a couple of inches here or there. the mountainous areas of idaho and montana would be the jackpot of this storm. so, as far as the forecast goes for today, notice the cooler temperatures, chance of showers many areas of the west. and watch out, travel not advised up through idaho and montana this afternoon. that's a look at your national forecast. now he cooler air mass, the skies should fill in quickly. so, the good news, i guess, with this big storm in the northern plains, it's not going to head to the east coast. that area's going to be spared, for once. >> i guess we don't get a third whammy. >> no. >> bill, thanks so much. >>> well, congressman jesse jackson jr. won re-election but could lose with the feds? and elec
and jumps. the one in the west has brought down the cooler temperatures through central california to southern portions of nevada. 48 right now in san francisco while 70 in phoenix. it won't last through the weekend. this culprit, this upper level low spinning over northern california, bringing rain showers to lower elevations and snowshowers, even moderate bursts of snow through the central and northern portions of the sierra. in the northwest we're okay. they're getting nailed in the northern rockies, the plume of moisture ahead of the storm system. winter storm warnings through all the mountains of utah and through montana where there's blizzard warnings in areas of northern portions of the state. notice in san diego, there's even a winter storm warning. as far as the snow totals expected, the northern portions of rockies is the bull's eye. the forecast is unsettled out periods of clouds and showers on and off throughout the day. >>> through the weekend this dips all the way down through even san diego, hopefully should clear out by sunday. >>> than. cia director petraeus on ben
, wind and rain. the national weather service issued a number of severe warnings. get this. california's mt. shasta could see an incredible 18 feet of snow over the next several days. nbc's meteorologist bill karins has details for us. bill, what can you tell us? >> as far as the snow goes, that's at the highest of elevations where no one lives. the only areas that will get the snow is possibly to the south in the central cascades. it's really the rainfall that's the big concern, the amount that's going to go into these rivers basins. as they accumulate and it continues to rain over the weekend, we're going to have flooding concerns. this morning we're soaked right now. the heaviest rains have shifted into the mountains. it's still raining pretty good. san francisco to san jose, a continuous steady rain out there. the real downpours have moved towards yuba city. this storm system is one piece of it. you can see the plume coming into california. there's another piece behind that has to kick through on saturday. it doesn't look like until monday, lynn, this area will have a dry day. majo
